THE RISE OF TÜRKİYE IN PROCESSED LEATHER AND FUR


Türkiye’s outstanding performance in the product group of processed leather and fur, comprising of rawhide and raw fur, as well as processed fur, semi-processed leather and finished leather, continues to increase. While the total exports of the leather manufacturers in the leather and leather goods industry in the period of January – August 2022 realized as 1.3 billion dollars, up by 21.1 percent over the same period of 2021, the share of processed leather and fur product group in the total exports of leather and leather goods reached 15 percent in the period of January – August 2022.


Türkiye’s outstanding performance in the product group of processed leather and fur, comprising of rawhide and raw fur, as well as processed fur, semi-processed leather and finished leather, continues to increase.


Considered as one of the most significant product groups in the leather and leather goods industry, processed leather and fur product group keeps expanding its exports market. Although Türkiye already exports this key product group, which is utilized as raw material by various industries, to a wide range of countries including the United States, India, Uzbekistan and Italy, the aim is to have access to a broader number of exports markets. Since the best way to accomplish this goal is to participate in international leather expos where global brands that have a say in the evolution of the tanning industry can witness Türkiye’s increasing performance in processed leather and fur, Türkiye has already attended a number of leather fairs held in Algeria, Italy and Morocco in recent years and had the opportunity to build fruitful business relations with reputable tanners, fur manufacturers, potential buyers and sourcing providers.


In 2021, Türkiye’s total exports of processed leather and fur reached 270 million dollars. While the total exports of leather and leather goods realized as 1.7 billion dollars with an increase of 29.6 percent over 2020, the product group of processed leather and fur increased its share in the total leather and leather goods exports to 15.6 percent in 2021. In the period of January – August 2022, a milestone was achieved: Türkiye’s total exports of processed leather and fur realized as 199.8 million dollars, almost about to reach 200 million dollars. In the same period, exports of semi-processed fur and leather-detailed fur increased by 20.1 percent over the same period of 2021, while the increase in rawhide and raw fur exports was reported as 115 percent.

A closer look at the remarkable figures achieved in 2021 and 2022


Semi-processed and finished leather

In 2021, Türkiye’s semi-processed and finished leather exports realized as 214.9 billion dollars, up by 64.1 percent over the previous year. The largest exports markets of the product group, which is used in leather garment production, turned out to be India (14.5 percent) and Italy (12 percent). While exports to India was reported as 31 million dollars with an increase of 96.8 percent over the previous year, exports to Italy was reported as 26 million dollars with an increase of 44.1 percent over 2020. The remaining countries in the top 10 included Germany, China, South Korea, Portugal, Spain, Dominican Republic, Russia and Hong Kong, respectively. Meanwhile, Türkiye’s semi-processed and finished leather exports to European Union countries realized as 89 million dollars, up by 39 percent over the previous year.


In the period of January – August 2022, semi-processed and finished leather exports reached 38.8 million dollars with an increase of 6.1 percent over the same period of 2021. The largest export markets in this product group turned out to be Italy and India in the period of January – August 2022. While exports to Italy reached 33.4 million dollars with an increase of 146.2 percent over the same period of 2021, exports to India realized as 21.4 million dollars, up by 14.1 percent over the same period of 2021. In the said period, exports of semi-processed and finished leather to European Union countries increased by 48.4 percent and reached 77.1 million dollars.


Processed fur

In 2021, Türkiye’s exports of processed fur was reported as 51 million dollars with an increase of 43.9 percent over 2020. The largest exports market of Türkiye turned out to be the Republic of South Korea, with an exports value of 13.9 million dollars corresponding to 27.1 percent of Türkiye’s total processed fur exports in 2021. South Korea was followed by Italy, Russia, Germany, Portugal, United Kingdom, India, United States and Pakistan. In the meantime, Türkiye’s processed fur exports to European Union countries reached 19.8 million dollars, with an increase of 62.8 percent over the previous year.


In the period of January – August 2022, processed fur exports realized as 156.7 million dollars, up by 24.2 percent over the same period of 2021. Türkiye’s largest export market in this product group turned out to be the Republic of South Korea, with an exports value of 10.6 million dollars, in the period of January – August 2022. In the said period, exports of processed fur to European Union countries increased by 9.4 percent and reached 16.5 million dollars.


Rawhide

In 2021, Türkiye’s rawhide exports reached 3.5 million dollars, up by 276.3 percent over the previous year. While the country’s largest exports market in 2021 turned out to be Italy (3.2 million dollars), other key exports markets in the same year can be listed as China, Nigeria, Russia, Serbia, Indonesia, Ghana, India and Lebanon, respectively.


In the period of January – August 2022, Türkiye’s exports of rawhide, used in the production of a wide range of goods including leather clothes, shoes and bags, reached 3.3 million dollars, up by 94.6 percent over the same period of 2021. While Türkiye’s largest export market in this field turned out to be Italy, with more than 3 million dollars, in the said period, other outstanding exports markets were listed as Spain, Albania, India and Uzbekistan, respectively.

Raw fur

Türkiye’s raw fur exports in 2021 realized as 249 thousand dollars, with an increase of 156.5 percent over the previous year. The largest exports markets of Türkiye in the field of raw fur realized as Russia (247.5 thousand dollars), Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom.


In the period of January – August 2022, Türkiye’s raw fur exports reached 884 thousand dollars, up by 257 percent over the same period of 2021. The top two largest exports markets of Türkiye in this field turned out to be Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom.
